Hospitalizations and/or deaths

To estimate seasonal flu burden, you will need to provide flu-related hospitalizations and/or deaths by age group for each season you selected.

How do I obtain numbers of flu hospitalization or deaths?

If you do not already have the number of flu hospitalizations or deaths for your country, you can check to see if those data have been reported by your national public health agency, the WHO Global Influenza Programme, or the WHO FluID platform. You may also enter your own estimates. If estimates are not already available for your populations of interest, guidance for generating estimates is available in WHO’s Manual for Estimating Disease Burden Associated With Seasonal Influenza.

Why do I need to choose the same option for all seasons?

When entering data for multiple seasons at the same time, the Flu Tool requires users to enter data using the same starting point for all seasons (e.g., hospitalizations, deaths, or both). This requirement reduces the complexity of the tool, so it can run smoothly in environments with limited internet connectivity as well as on a variety of platforms, including smartphones. Users can still calculate flu burden for each season individually, if not all seasons would use the same type of data as a starting point.
